This delicate origami inspired rain chain design is highly efficient and can handle a variety of rainfall conditions. It’s made up of beautiful and interesting angular shapes that intersect to make a mesmerizing design. Even though it’s very open looking and modern, it transports water very well!
This rain chain is made of 304 stainless steel. It's available in brushed Stainless Steel with brass end nuts, Black powder-coated stainless steel, or Copper-Plated stainless steel.
Please Note: This rain chain is not recommended for windy climates or lengths over 20 feet. The Black option no longer comes with rounded end-nuts (pictured), they will be the same shape as the Stainless Steel and Copper-Plated designs.
Powder coating will last on exterior products, paint will not. It's a good idea to avoid cheap copies with painted parts. Powder-coating is a type of coating which includes metal that is applied as a free-flowing, dry powder. The coating is typically applied electrostatically and is then cured under heat to allow it to flow and form a "skin". It’s used to create a hard finish that's tougher than conventional paint. Powder coating is mainly used for coating of metals.
The cups are packed separately in order to prevent damage in transit and reduce packaging volume, so some assembly is required. It just takes a few minutes with no tools. This rain chain comes with a matching v-hook for easy installation.
This is my favorite of all the cup style chains. I love the origami shapes, and the copper finish looks pretty good next to the wood deck framing. It replaced a conventional chain that was splashing rain all over the place. This does a good job of channeling the water down. It is well-designed and constructed and was easy to assemble. Also I like how it was compactly boxed up for shipping with virtually no chance of any damage.
My only criticism: The vertical space between the mounting kit outlet and the top chain link allows water to escape out through the 'V' shaped opening, just missing the edge near the bottom nut. I installed a homemade sleeve just above the top link to keep the flow inside the chain. That works pretty well. Designing a narrower outlet above the chain would probably help. Or since it may only affect this particular chain style, a better solution may be to engineer a unique top link for the origami chain that is solid all around with no opening on two sides.
To eliminate a puddle near the deck post, I installed the chain into an elbow. So now we can enjoy watching water fall while still diverting it almost as well as a solid downspout would.

I'm very pleased with my Origami rain chain. It's solid and well-built. Packaging and instructions were well done. I appreciate the strong hanging hardware. Aesthetically, it looks great. Now that it's installed, I'm not sure if it'll handle the large flow of my downspout without excessive splashing, but I attribute that to the fundamental trade-offs of a rain chain.
