We love Masaya & Co.’s “Seed to Seat” sustainable business model!
Masaya & Co. uses wood grown on deforested cow pastures in Nicaragua to make their furniture. Their plantations are reforestation projects. They plant hundreds of thousands of high-quality hardwoods each year!
By annually planting more trees than they harvest, a replenishing cycle is established providing both environmental and economic benefits.
Teak is one of the most prized hardwoods worldwide. Teak is highly valued for its durability, water resistance, and has been used for centuries in boat building, exterior construction, and furniture. Teak is an excellent plantation tree, as it restores ruined land to forest, and provides four times the jobs as cattle farming.
When kept indoors, Teak presents as a honey blonde color that gains richness with time. On outdoor furniture, it will patina to a silver gray. If possible, cover the furniture with weatherproof furniture covers to further protect the pieces. Routine maintenance is also recommended, depending on the furniture’s expose to sun and outdoor elements. Natural wood oil can be used over time to replenish the surface luster as well as to repair any minor nicks or scratches.
